The aim is to use the language, which primarily means speaking it. Understanding how the language works in itself is virtually useless – unless, of course, you are preparing a PhD in Romance Languages.
The peculiarity of languages is that, in the mind, the logic and language work beautifully together. The minute sounds are produced, however, things become somewhat more challenging.

How it works
Standard lessons are 1:30 hour in duration with these exceptions:

younger students, pre-GCSE and under 14 years of age, who can choose to have lessons of only 1 hour
-
adult students, who can choose to have lessons lasting 2 hours or more
Initially, the standard 1:30-hour lesson often seems too long to students until they try it. See this page for information about a trial lesson at a discounted fee.
Students soon realize that their 1:30-hour lesson goes in a jiffy (en moins de deux in French ... the French are great mathematicians). It is difficult to achieve anything serious and long-lasting with regards to language in under an hour. Adapting the pace of the student and sparing enough time for overlap is paramount in lessons such as these. Over 25 years of teaching has taught this tutor that ignoring either of these parameters is detrimental to the student's learning.

Lessons are delivered in your home or office at the student's convenience.

Homework is available to any student – and highly recommended. It is corrected outside the lesson. For exams students, it goes with the package and is negotiable only as far as volume is concerned, not in principle.

Lessons are delivered over the Internet using Skype (free download), a Voice over Internet Protocol (or VoIP) program.
Recommendations:

use a headset as the sound is of better quality, and
-
use a web camera as it is easier to interact if we can see each other
